1993 Diagnostic study of coffee sector in the Northern and North-eastern regions
1995 A proposal for a 3 year national programme to maintain sustainable coffee production was submitted to the European Union.
1997 Start of programme in the Northern and North-eastern regions to support small-scale coffee producers in 7 cooperatives (Appui à l’Ecosystème Caféier: APECA) with financial support through Oxfam GB and technical assistance from SEFADES.
1997 Oxfam first approached Twin to support a project to improve the situation of small coffee farmers in Haïti….
1997 Formation of RECOCARNO as apex body to the group of cooperatives.
1998 RECOCARNO established with the aim of becoming the first, farmer-owned exporter of quality coffee in Haïti. Integrated programme of work to achieve this goal involving Twin and SEFADES, a local NGO.
1998 Registered as a Fairtrade supplier.
1998 Cafédirect took delivery of RECOCARNO's first container of coffee. RECOCARNO becomes a Cafédirect producer-partner.
2000 Awarded Fairtrade status following 2 successful visits by FLO representatives.
2000-2001 Challenges presented by infestation by the Coffee-Borer or Broca.
2001 First shipments to Fairtrade buyers in Japan and the Netherlands.
2002 Funding from the UK National Lottery Community Fund for a three-year project to improve infrastructure and communications, continue Twin’s export and management training. Also continue quality improvement, and explore access to wider international markets.
