The
second biggest country in the Caribbean, and lying 55 miles east-southeast
of Cuba across the Windward Passage, Haïti makes up of the western
third of the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with the Spanish-speaking
Dominican Republic. Near the centre of the West Indies, Haïti is
barely 2 hours flight from Miami, via Port-au-Prince.
The RECOCARNO area falls almost entirely within the North and North-East
Departments of Haïti, an area dominated by the Massif du Nord (Northern
Massif). The port of export, Cap-Haïtien, lies on the narrow Plaine
du Nord (Northern Plain). The border with the Dominican Republic
follows, in part, the Massacre River in this northern region.
