With a population of 7 million in an area of 10,714 square miles
(27,750 sq km), Haïti is the most densely populated country in the
Western Hemisphere. Haïti is an extremely poor and disadvantaged
country with a population that has the poorest health indicators,
lowest school literacy rates and lowest per capita income in the
Western Hemisphere. The economy has suffered from years of mismanagement
and has only recently begun to be reconstructed.
The official language of Haïti is French but the majority
of Haïtians speak only Creole, a pidgin French which has been
influenced by the many African languages spoken by the slaves who
were brought to Haïti before independence was declared in 1804.
