RECOCARNO Exports
of Fairtrade Coffee Most coffee produced
by RECOCARNO farmers is exported to the Fairtrade market. The lower quality crop (i.e. Coffee that does not meet the standards of the collection / washing stations for export) usually becomes café pilé and is used for the farmers' own family requirements or is traded locally. RECOCARNO
has begun trials for marketing its own roasted coffee "Kafe
pa Nou" ('Our Coffee") on the local markets. Some coffee is also smuggled to neighbouring Dominican Republic.
Coffee is available for export from December to July.

Exports are entirely of green coffee, for roasting and packing by the importers.

RECOCARNO's Fairtrade coffee is imported by Twin Trading
in the UK for sale under the Cafédirect brand name,
by El Puente in Germany under the brand name Cafe Creole d’Haiti, by Oxfam Belgium,
and by Alter Trade Japan for the gourmet market.

RECOCARNO has steadily increased its production capacity
while maintaining quality and successfully exported 236 tonnes of coffee to the European market during 2002-03.
RECOCARNO offers the following types of washed Arabica coffee for
export:
Gourmet coffee (screen
size 17 to 20).
All beans coffee (screen size 15
to 16).
RECOCARNO coffee has a medium to high acidity, good body
and aroma and produces a very fine roast. | | RECOCARNO
continues to work on building export volumes, necessary
to become wholly cost-effective and then to reduce its
dependency on Fairtrade and other external subsidies,
though the volatile international coffee price makes
this a very challenging objective.

The term container
in the context of coffee exports describes a "Twenty foot Equivalent
Unit", or TEU, which takes 250 x 60kg (132 lb) jute or sisal bags
of green coffee. Therefore, 7 containers is equal to 7 times 15,000
kgs (or 7 x 33,000 lbs, a total of 231,000 lbs). Click here

| RECOCARNO
has rapidly established itself as a leading Haïtian exporter
of quality washed Arabica coffee. In its 7 years of exporting
experience, RECOCARNO has become a dominant producer and exporter
responsible for 60% of all such exports originating from northern
Haïti. Today, RECOCARNO produces a higher quality coffee and
is committed to mobilising all producer groups to actively engage
and lobby the state to regenerate the Haïtian coffee sector.
Specifically, RECOCARNO believes meeting a growing global demand
for higher quality coffee can revive the Haïtian sector. Members
have accomplished 'the unthinkable' by mobilising their experience,
resources and common vision. Small producers like RECOCARNO
understand for the first time that are not only participants,
but leaders in the market through their joint efforts. |
