Plaine du Nord near Cap-Haïtien: land purchased by RECOCARNO to build central mill on, showing the drainage that is first needed.   The rugged country typical of that through which the parchment coffee travels en route to the mills (see below).

RECOCARNO urgently needs a centralised mill in Cap Haïtien to process the coffee from cooperatives in Puilboreau, Champagne and Petit Bourg de Borgne. Currently, the coffee from these areas is being transported an extra 60-70km to be dry-processed. A central mill is needed to absorb the growing volumes of coffee from Petit Bourg de Borgne. Because the existing dry mills are situated in the same compounds as washing stations, milling can only begin once all the coffee has been dried, because of a lack of storage, bulking and hand-picking space. A centralised mill could mean dry processing could begin in Oct/Nov and coffee could be available for export in Nov/Dec.

Significant funding for the project is being provided by STABEX.
HAP provided the designer for the mill.
JOA provided funding for the milling plant’s equipment.
Oxfam-GB funded the purchase of the land at Plaine-du-Nord on which the plant is being built.

The facility could be up and running as early as next milling season (beginning September 2005).
